Third-party estimates from Rome2Rio put Ann Arbor at about 25 minutes, Detroit at about 29 minutes, Novi at about 15 minutes, and Detroit Metro Airport at about 23 minutes from Plymouth. Those are estimates, not measurements, and they are not rush-hour figures. Plymouth's real commuting advantage is position: it sits just south of M-14 and just west of I-275, which is why so many different job centers land inside half an hour.
One thing to be direct about before the table: Plymouth is car-dependent today. Wayne County voters approved a countywide transit millage in August 2026 and Plymouth is now inside the SMART service area, but the buses are not running here yet. If you are moving from a city where you did not need a car, you will need one here.
What are the estimated drive times from Plymouth?
Every figure in this table is a third-party estimate published by Rome2Rio. None of them is a measurement we took, and none of them should be treated as a guaranteed travel time.
| Destination | Distance (Rome2Rio estimate) | Estimated drive time (Rome2Rio) |
|---|---|---|
| Northville | 3.1 mi | About 6 min |
| Canton | 5.5 mi | About 9 min |
| Livonia | 6.2 mi | About 11 min |
| Novi | 8.5 mi | About 15 min |
| Ann Arbor | 17 mi | About 25 min |
| Detroit Metro Airport (DTW) | 17.9 mi | About 23 min |
| Detroit | 24.7 mi | About 29 min |

Which of these distances are independently corroborated?
Only two, and even those do not match exactly.
Wikipedia's entry on Plymouth, Michigan describes the city as roughly 27 miles northwest of downtown Detroit and about 18 miles northeast of Ann Arbor. Rome2Rio gives 24.7 miles to Detroit and 17 miles to Ann Arbor.
| Destination | Rome2Rio | Wikipedia | Agreement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Detroit | 24.7 mi | About 27 mi | Close, not identical |
| Ann Arbor | 17 mi | About 18 mi | Close, not identical |
| Novi, Livonia, Canton, Northville, DTW | Listed | Not listed | Single source only |
Two sources a couple of miles apart is normal. They are measuring from different points, and "Plymouth" is itself two municipalities. The takeaway: Detroit and Ann Arbor mileage is corroborated in the right range by two independent sources. Every other distance on the table rests on a single source.
How do M-14 and I-275 shape the commute?
This is the part that actually explains the numbers.
Plymouth sits just south of M-14 and just west of I-275. M-14 runs west toward Ann Arbor and east toward I-275. I-275 runs north and south, connecting up toward Novi and down toward Detroit Metro Airport.
That combination is why the destinations in the table point in four different directions and still come in under thirty minutes. You are not choosing between a highway to the west and a highway to the east. You have both, plus the north-south spine, within a few minutes of most Plymouth addresses.
Two practical consequences:
Westbound is the Ann Arbor commute. M-14 is the route. Research, university, and medical work sits at the end of it.
Southbound is the airport. I-275 to DTW is the reason a 23-minute airport estimate is plausible at all, and it matters for anyone who travels for work.
Why does everyone say Plymouth is car-dependent?
Because it is, and it is one of the real downsides of living here. But the standard line that Plymouth has no public transit at all is now out of date, and it is worth getting the current picture right.
What changed. Plymouth and Plymouth Township historically opted out of SMART, which is why no fixed-route bus served the area. On August 4, 2026, Wayne County voters approved a countywide transit millage, 0.9831 mills for 10 years, and that vote eliminated the opt-outs. Plymouth is now inside the SMART service area. SMART's February 2026 Wayne County Transit Evaluation proposes three routes touching Plymouth: Route 295 (Plymouth), Route 290 (Newburgh) and Route 345 (Haggerty). Rollout is phased across 2026 to 2029, the next wave begins in spring 2027, and the Plymouth-area routes are indicated for 2027 to 2028.
What has not changed yet. Fixed-route buses are not running in Plymouth today. Funded and planned is not the same as operating, and a commute you cannot take this year is not a commute. Before August 2026 the only service here was Plymouth Community Senior Transportation, for residents 60 and over.
So the practical advice is unchanged for anyone signing a lease now. There is no commuter rail to Ann Arbor, Novi or Detroit. Getting to the airport means driving or paying someone to drive you. Groceries, schools and most employment are car trips.
If you are a two-adult household, plan on two cars. If you are moving from a transit city, budget for a vehicle, insurance, and fuel as a new line item, because the rent comparison alone will mislead you. Add winter: the estimates in the table are not January estimates. Check SMART for a current service map before you assume a route exists.
What else should you know before trusting a drive time estimate?
Four things I tell people before they sign a lease based on a commute:
Rush hour is not in the estimate. These are third-party point-to-point estimates. I-275 and M-14 both carry heavy commuter traffic. Your 7:45 a.m. trip is not the estimate.
"Detroit" is not one place. The 24.7-mile figure is to Detroit. Downtown Detroit, Midtown, and the Detroit suburbs are different trips.
"Plymouth" is not one place either. The City of Plymouth is 2.22 square miles inside a 16-square-mile Township. Your starting point moves the number. See our guide to City of Plymouth vs Plymouth Township.
Drive it before you sign. At the hour you would actually drive it, on a weekday. No estimate replaces that.
Where should you live in Plymouth based on your commute?
Both of our communities sit in Plymouth with highway access, and the difference between them is more about downtown proximity than highway proximity.
Z on Plymouth, 40275 Plymouth Road, is about 3 miles from Downtown Plymouth, described on its own page as about 7 minutes away. It has 80 units across two stories, 850 to 1,000 square feet, with central air conditioning and private decks.
Z on Coolidge, 725 Coolidge, is under a mile from Downtown Plymouth, walking or biking distance. Units run 850 to 1,000 square feet with wall unit air conditioning, not central, and a private deck or balcony.
Starting rents at the time of writing were $1,499 for a one-bedroom and $1,699 for a two-bedroom at both communities. Check the availability page for current pricing.

Frequently asked questions
How far is Plymouth, MI from Ann Arbor?
Rome2Rio estimates 17 miles and about 25 minutes by car. Wikipedia independently describes Plymouth as roughly 18 miles northeast of Ann Arbor. The two sources agree in range but not exactly. The route is M-14 westbound. Both figures are estimates, not rush-hour times.
How far is Plymouth, MI from downtown Detroit?
Rome2Rio estimates 24.7 miles and about 29 minutes. Wikipedia describes Plymouth as roughly 27 miles northwest of downtown Detroit. Detroit is the other destination with independent mileage corroboration. Treat the drive time as a third-party estimate that does not account for rush hour.
How long is the drive from Plymouth to Detroit Metro Airport?
Rome2Rio estimates 17.9 miles and about 23 minutes, generally via I-275 southbound. That distance is single-source and not independently corroborated. Allow more time than the estimate for traffic, weather, and parking, particularly in winter.
Is there public transportation from Plymouth, MI?
Not yet, but it is coming. Wayne County voters approved a countywide transit millage on August 4, 2026, which eliminated opt-outs and put Plymouth inside the SMART service area. Routes 295, 290 and 345 are proposed, phased 2026 to 2029, with Plymouth-area service indicated for 2027 to 2028. Fixed-route buses are not running in Plymouth today, so plan on owning a vehicle.
What highways serve Plymouth, Michigan?
Plymouth sits just south of M-14 and just west of I-275. M-14 handles westbound travel toward Ann Arbor and eastbound connections. I-275 runs north toward Novi and south toward Detroit Metro Airport. That pairing is the main reason several job centers fall inside about thirty minutes.
Are these drive times accurate during rush hour?
No. Every time in this guide is an off-peak third-party estimate from Rome2Rio. I-275 and M-14 both carry heavy commuter volume, and Michigan winter conditions add more. Drive your actual route at your actual commute hour before signing a lease.
