Adient, a global automotive seating company with about 65,000 employees worldwide as of 2025, is headquartered in Plymouth, Michigan. Aisin World Corp. of America, Hella Corporate Center USA, and Metaldyne are based in Plymouth Charter Township. Outside the borders, Ford's Livonia Transmission Plant, Trinity Health Livonia, and Schoolcraft College all sit within a short drive. Plymouth's job market is auto, healthcare, and campus, in that order.

Two disclosures up front, because they shape what this article can and cannot tell you. First, we do not publish Michigan-specific headcounts for Adient, Aisin, or Hella, because those numbers are not verified. Second, we do not publish any University of Michigan employment figure, for the same reason. Ann Arbor is about 17 miles away and U-M is there. That is as far as we will go.

Which employers are actually in Plymouth?

Notice a pattern. Four of the five are automotive or automotive supply, and three sit in Plymouth Charter Township rather than the City of Plymouth. That distinction matters more than newcomers expect, and we cover it in City of Plymouth vs Plymouth Township.

We are deliberately not giving you a "Plymouth employs X people at Adient" number. That figure gets repeated across relocation blogs and we cannot verify it. A number you cannot verify is worse than no number, because you might make a decision on it.

What auto industry jobs are within a short drive?

Plymouth's automotive footprint extends well past its own borders, and for most renters the relevant plants are the Ford facilities nearby.

FacilityAddress or cityVerified detail
Ford Livonia Transmission Plant36200 Plymouth Road, Livonia182 acres, 3.3 million square feet. Described as the largest transmission plant in North America. Employee count not published
Ford Michigan Assembly PlantWayne, MichiganAbout 5,600 hourly and 350 salaried employees as of June 2025. Builds the Bronco and the Ranger

Ford Michigan Assembly is the one facility on this page where we have a real, dated headcount.

Note the Livonia plant's address: 36200 Plymouth Road. That is the same road Z on Plymouth sits on at 40275 Plymouth Road. Rome2Rio estimates Livonia at 6.2 miles and about 11 minutes from Plymouth, a third-party estimate and not a rush-hour figure.

What healthcare employers are near Plymouth?

Trinity Health Livonia, formerly St. Mary Mercy Livonia, is a 304-bed hospital founded in 1959. Trinity Health Michigan employs more than 14,000 people across six Southeast Michigan counties.

That 14,000 figure is a system-wide Michigan number, not a Livonia number, and the breakdown is not published. What it tells a renter is simpler: a major healthcare employer has a substantial presence roughly 11 minutes away by Rome2Rio estimate.

Shift work changes what you want in an apartment. If you work nights, you care how quiet the building is at 10 a.m., not 10 p.m. Both of our communities are 100% smoke-free with in-unit full-size washers and dryers, which removes the shared-laundry timing problem that wrecks a shift worker's day off.

What about campus and education employment?

Schoolcraft College sits in Livonia on a 139-acre campus off Haggerty Road, with about 13,019 students, 5,709 of them full-time and 7,310 part-time. Its millage appears on Plymouth Township tax bills, which is a concrete sign of how tied the college is to this community.

Plymouth-Canton Community Schools is the other education employer in the immediate area, operating 14 elementary schools, 5 middle schools, the three high schools of the Plymouth-Canton Educational Park, and Starkweather Academy. We cover the district in detail in our schools guide for renters.

Ann Arbor is about 17 miles away by Rome2Rio estimate, roughly 25 minutes, and the University of Michigan is there. We are not publishing a U-M employment figure. If you are relocating for a U-M job, use the university's own HR materials for anything numeric.

What are the honest downsides of relocating to Plymouth for a job?

Five, and I would rather you hear them from a landlord than find them in month two.

It is car-dependent, and transit is very limited. There is no commuter rail to Ann Arbor, Detroit, or Novi. If your household has two workers, plan on two vehicles. This is the single most common thing that surprises people relocating from a transit city. See Commuting From Plymouth.

The economy is automotive-weighted. Adient, Aisin, Hella, Metaldyne, and two Ford plants. Concentration is efficient when the sector is strong and it is a risk when it is not. If you are moving a household on one auto-sector income, that is worth thinking about honestly.

Plymouth is not cheap relative to much of Metro Detroit. Newer loft product near downtown was advertising one-bedrooms in the $1,900s in September 2026. Older established garden communities were advertising one-bedrooms under $1,200. Renovated mid-tier communities sit between the two. You are paying for the location.

Michigan winters are part of the commute. Every drive time estimate in this guide is an off-peak, fair-weather third-party estimate. January is not that.

A 48170 address does not tell you which municipality you are in. The City of Plymouth and Plymouth Charter Township are two separate governments sharing a ZIP code, with different services, different trash contracts, different on-street parking rules and different tax treatment. Our own two communities land on opposite sides of it: Z on Plymouth is in the Township, Z on Coolidge is in the City. Confirm which one an address is in before you sign anything.

Transit is funded but not running. Wayne County voters approved a countywide transit millage on August 4, 2026, eliminating opt-outs and putting Plymouth inside the SMART service area, with routes proposed and phased 2026 to 2029. Buses are not operating in Plymouth yet, so if you are relocating for a job here this year, plan to drive.

What should a relocating renter budget?

Check the availability page for current pricing. Advertised rents move, and third-party listing sites do not always match.

On the income requirement: at a $1,499 one-bedroom, a 3x standard means roughly $4,497 in gross monthly income. Run your own number before you apply rather than after. We break the math down in Income Required to Rent in Plymouth.

Which Plymouth apartment fits a relocating worker?

Z on Plymouth, 40275 Plymouth Road, is 80 units over two stories, 50 one-bedrooms and 30 two-bedrooms, 850 to 1,000 square feet, with central air conditioning and private decks. It went through a $2.5 million renovation covering kitchens, flooring, and bathrooms. About 3 miles from downtown, described on its own page as about 7 minutes away.

Z on Coolidge, 725 Coolidge, is 24 units across four buildings of one- and two-bedroom homes, 850 to 1,000 square feet, recently renovated top to bottom in 2026, under a mile from Downtown Plymouth and walkable or bikeable to it. Air conditioning here is wall unit, not central, which is a real difference and one you should factor into an August decision.

Both have white shaker cabinets, quartz countertops, stainless steel appliances, euro-glass stand-up showers, luxury vinyl plank flooring, and in-unit full-size washers and dryers. Both offer 3D Matterport virtual tours, which is genuinely useful when you are relocating from out of state and cannot walk the unit.

Policies worth knowing before you plan a move: minimum one-year lease is standard with shorter terms at a premium, parking is unassigned at one vehicle per tenant with no garages or carports, there is no pool, and pets are cats only at a $350 one-time fee plus $25 per month.
