Six things, in this order: confirm which municipality your address is in, set up utilities, change your address with the Michigan Secretary of State, learn your trash day and winter parking rules, register to vote, and get a library card. Everything else is packing. Here is the week-by-week countdown.

This is the operational companion to our Moving to Plymouth, Michigan guide. That guide covers whether to move here and what the city is like. This one covers what to do on which day. Read that one first if you are still deciding.

Where we do not have a verified local detail, we say so and tell you who to call instead of guessing. A wrong trash day is worse than a missing one.

Days 30 to 22: Which Plymouth are you moving to?

Confirm your municipality. Step one, and almost nobody does it. The City of Plymouth and Plymouth Charter Township are two separate governments sharing the 48170 ZIP code. The City is surrounded by, but independent of, the Township.

Our community thereZ on Coolidge, 725 CoolidgeZ on Plymouth, 40275 Plymouth Road

Both are in Wayne County. Their fire departments consolidated in 1995, with the City contributing $1 million annually, about 25% of that budget. Other services are administered separately.

Our own two communities are the example. Z on Coolidge is in the City of Plymouth. Z on Plymouth is in Plymouth Charter Township. Same owner, same lease, same ZIP code, two different sets of municipal rules for trash, on-street parking and snow emergencies. Full breakdown: City of Plymouth vs Plymouth Township.

Confirm your school district if you have kids. Use the Wayne County RESA School District and Attendance Locator with your exact street address. Most Plymouth addresses are in Plymouth-Canton Community Schools, but some outlying Township addresses may not be. See our schools guide for renters.

Line up renters insurance. Required at both of our communities. Do it now, not on move-in day, because you will need proof before you get keys.

Read your lease's utility section. At Z on Plymouth and Z on Coolidge there is a monthly utility fee of $99 for a one-bedroom and $135 for a two-bedroom, plus a $26 monthly administrative fee. That fee covers gas, heat, water, sewer, and trash, and electric is billed separately to the resident. Know what your building bundles before you open accounts you do not need.

Days 21 to 15: What utilities and accounts do you set up?

Set up electric service in your name with DTE Energy. Electric is the resident's responsibility at both communities, and it is the only utility account you need to open. DTE also offers BudgetWise Billing, a levelized plan built from the prior 12 months of usage at your specific address, reviewed quarterly, with a settlement month in month 12. Worth asking about if you would rather not watch the bill swing between February and July.

A local quirk worth knowing: electric and gas here are different companies. Electric is DTE Energy. Natural gas is Consumers Energy. In much of Michigan one utility does both, and people moving in assume the same here and call the wrong company. At our communities gas is inside the monthly utility fee, so you will not open a gas account, but if you rent elsewhere in 48170 you will be dealing with two utilities, not one. We could not confirm whether Consumers Energy offers a gas budget plan equivalent to DTE's, so ask them directly.

Confirm what else you owe separately. At Z on Plymouth and Z on Coolidge, nothing else. Gas, heat, water, sewer, and trash are all inside the monthly utility fee, so there is no water bill, no sewer charge, no trash invoice, and no gas account to open. Other Plymouth buildings split these differently, so if you are renting elsewhere, ask which utilities the landlord bills separately and get the list in the lease before move-in week.

Set up internet. Schedule installation now. Install appointments are the most common move-in week failure, and they book out further than people expect.

Ask your leasing office for the building operations sheet. Trash day, recycling day, snow removal expectations, and the parking rules. At our communities, parking is unassigned at one vehicle per tenant, with no garages or carports.

Days 14 to 8: Who needs your new address, and what does the Secretary of State require?

Change your address with the Michigan Secretary of State, immediately. Not within 10 days. Immediately. MCL 257.315 sets no day count at all: a licensee who changes residence "shall immediately notify the secretary of state of his or her new residence address." Failure is a civil infraction. The "10 days" figure repeated across moving checklists is not in the statute, so do not treat it as a grace period.

Moving from out of state, this is also where you convert your driver's license and register your vehicle. Moving within Michigan, it is an address update on the license and registration.

There is no Secretary of State office in Plymouth. The nearest branch is Canton, 8565 N. Lilley Rd., Canton, MI 48187. Alternates are Livonia at 17176 Farmington Rd. and Westland at 6090 N. Wayne Rd.

Do not skip this. Your license address drives voter registration, vehicle registration, and often your insurance rate.

File a change of address with the postal service. Start mail forwarding a few days before your move, not the day of.

Update the rest. Bank, payroll, insurance, subscriptions, anything that sends you a physical bill.

Register to vote at your new address. Michigan voter registration is handled by your local clerk, and which clerk depends on whether you are in the City or the Township. That is why Days 30 to 22 came first.

Michigan has same-day registration, under Mich. Const. art. II, § 4(1)(f). The deadline depends on how far out you are:

WhenHow you can register
15 or more days before an electionOnline, by mail, or in person
14 days before through Election DayIn person at your local clerk's office only, with proof of residency
Election DayIn person at your clerk, and anyone in line by 8 p.m. may register

So you cannot miss the deadline, but in that last two-week window you lose the online option and you must bring proof of residency. A lease and a utility bill in your name are the usual documents.

Your clerk:

  • City of Plymouth Clerk: 201 S. Main St., Plymouth, MI 48170, (734) 453-1234 ext. 225 or 234, Monday to Friday 8:00 to 4:30
  • Plymouth Charter Township Clerk: 9955 N. Haggerty Rd., Plymouth, MI 48170, (734) 354-3224, Monday to Friday 8:00 to 4:30

If you are moving into Z on Coolidge, that is the City clerk. Z on Plymouth, the Township clerk.

Days 7 to 1: What is left in the last week?

Confirm your move-in appointment and what you owe at signing. Our published figures: a $65 non-refundable application fee per applicant, a $1,000 holding deposit that is credited toward your total move-in costs rather than charged on top of them, and a security deposit equal to one month's rent, higher for challenged credit and capped at one and a half months by Michigan law. That deposit is fully refundable if the unit is returned in original condition, normal wear and tear excepted. There is also a one-time $350 cleaning fee and a one-time $125 document preparation fee, both due at move-in. Application through move-in totals $3,663 on a one-bedroom and $4,099 on a two-bedroom at starting rents: $1,065 at application, the balance at move-in.

Confirm your trash and recycling day. Both municipalities contract with Priority Waste, but under separate contracts with different service windows, which is exactly why your municipality matters.

  • City of Plymouth: automated cart, 65 or 95 gallon. City service days run Monday through Wednesday. Compost collection April 6 through December 4. Bulk items limited to 3 items or 8 bags and must be scheduled.
  • Plymouth Charter Township: service through the Township Solid Waste Department, 734-414-1452. Township service days run Monday through Friday. Carts at the curb by 7:00 a.m., and no earlier than 6:00 p.m. the night before. Holiday weeks shift collection to Saturday.

Neither municipality publishes an address lookup tool, so we cannot print the day for a specific building, including our own. Call Priority Waste at 586-228-1200 with your street address and write the answer on the refrigerator.

Learn the on-street parking rules before your first snow. Renters usually learn these by getting ticketed, and the two municipalities do not handle them the same way.

In the City of Plymouth, Sec. 70-93 prohibits parking on any public street, court or alley from 3:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m., year-round, except Sundays and holidays. Read that again: it is not a winter rule and it is not weather-triggered. It applies in July. The City sells residential permits at $25 a year where off-street parking is insufficient, plus temporary permits for up to 14 days a month. During a declared snow emergency, parking is banned on any public street entirely, and vehicles may be ticketed or towed.

In Plymouth Charter Township, there are no snow emergency declarations, because the local roads are Wayne County Roads (1-888-762-3273) or private HOA roads rather than Township roads. Whether the Township has any general overnight on-street parking prohibition is not something we could verify, and we are not going to invent one. Call the Township at 734-453-3840 before you park a second vehicle on the street.

At our buildings this matters less, because parking is off-street and unassigned at one vehicle per tenant. It matters a great deal if you have a second vehicle, a visitor, or a work truck.

Do a walkthrough and document condition. Photograph everything before you move a box in. It is the single best protection for your security deposit, and as a landlord I would rather you have the photos than not.

What should you do during move-in week and the first 30 days after?

Get a library card at the Plymouth District Library, 223 S. Main St., Plymouth, MI 48170, 734-453-0750. It sits downtown near The Gathering and the Central Parking Deck. Hours are Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday through Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This is one of the few things the City/Township split does not complicate. It is a district library covering both municipalities, and its borrowing policy states that "all residents or property owners of record in the City of Plymouth and Plymouth Township are eligible to receive all Library services." City or Township, you get the same card and the same access. Non-resident cards carry a Board-set fee, which the library does not publish, so ask if you are outside both.

Learn the Saturday pattern. The Plymouth Farmers Market runs Saturdays, May through October, at The Gathering next to Kellogg Park. The DDA publishes 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; the Chamber, which runs it, publishes 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Check before you go.

Put the January parks date on your calendar. Plymouth Township Park at 46640 Ann Arbor Trail is 80 acres with a children's PlayScape, an ADA PlayScape, a sprayscape, a fishing pond and dock, baseball diamonds, and winter sledding. Resident shelter reservations open in person on a single date each January. For 2026 that was January 13, doors at 7 a.m. at Township Hall. If you want a shelter, that morning is the whole game.

Drive your commute at your actual commute hour. Rome2Rio estimates put Ann Arbor at about 25 minutes, Detroit at about 29 minutes, Novi at about 15 minutes, and DTW at about 23 minutes. Those are third-party estimates, not rush-hour figures. See Commuting From Plymouth.

What do people get wrong about moving to Plymouth?

They assume 48170 means one place. It does not. Your clerk, your services, and your school verification all depend on whether you are in the City or the Township.

They underestimate car dependency. Wayne County voters approved a countywide transit millage on August 4, 2026, which eliminated opt-outs and put Plymouth inside the SMART service area, with routes proposed and phased from 2026 to 2029. But fixed-route buses are not running in Plymouth yet. Plan on a vehicle, and a second one in a two-worker household.

They assume the Secretary of State gives them 10 days. It does not. MCL 257.315 says immediately, and the nearest branch is in Canton.

They treat advertised rent as the total. On top of rent at our communities: a $99 or $135 monthly utility fee covering gas, heat, water, sewer, and trash, a $26 administrative fee, separately billed electric, and required renters insurance. That works out to $1,624 all-in on a one-bedroom and $1,860 on a two-bedroom, before electric. Starting rents at the time of writing were $1,499 for a one-bedroom and $1,699 for a two-bedroom. Check the availability page for current pricing.

They skip the condition photos. Then they argue about the deposit twelve months later.

They wait until December to think about winter. Learn the parking and snow rules in your first week.

Which policies should you confirm before you sign?

Confirm the rules that are hard to work around later. At Z on Plymouth and Z on Coolidge: cats are accepted, up to two per unit, at a $350 one-time pet fee plus $25 per month, both communities are 100% smoke-free, there is no pool, and painting is generally not permitted. A one-year minimum lease is standard, with shorter terms at a premium.

Frequently asked questions

How do you know whether your Plymouth address is in the City or the Township?

A "Plymouth, MI 48170" mailing address does not tell you. The City of Plymouth and Plymouth Charter Township are separate governments sharing one ZIP code. Call the City Treasurer at 734-453-1234, or Plymouth Charter Township at 734-453-3840, 9955 N. Haggerty Rd, to confirm which one serves your address.

How long do you have to change your address with the Michigan Secretary of State?

There is no grace period. MCL 257.315 requires a licensee who changes residence to "immediately" notify the Secretary of State of the new address, and failure is a civil infraction. The widely repeated 10-day figure is not in the statute. There is no branch in Plymouth; the nearest is Canton, 8565 N. Lilley Rd.

Can you register to vote on Election Day in Michigan?

Yes. Michigan has same-day registration. From 15 days before an election you may register online, by mail or in person. From 14 days before through Election Day you must register in person at your local clerk, with proof of residency. Anyone in line by 8 p.m. on Election Day may register.

Which library serves Plymouth renters, and who can get a card?

The Plymouth District Library, 223 S. Main St., open Monday to Thursday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday to Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is a district library: all residents and property owners of record in both the City of Plymouth and Plymouth Township are eligible for all library services. Non-resident cards carry a Board-set fee.

What school district serves Plymouth, MI addresses?

Most Plymouth addresses are in Plymouth-Canton Community Schools, but some outlying Plymouth Township addresses may fall outside it. Confirm your specific address using the Wayne County RESA School District and Attendance Locator before you sign a lease. Do not rely on a listing site's school assignment.

What costs beyond rent should you budget for in Plymouth?

At Z on Plymouth and Z on Coolidge, expect a $99 monthly utility fee on a one-bedroom or $135 on a two-bedroom, covering gas, heat, water, sewer, and trash, plus a $26 monthly administrative fee, separately billed electric, and required renters insurance. Ask any community you tour for the all-in monthly figure in writing before you apply.

What policies should renters confirm before signing a Plymouth lease?

At our communities, cats are accepted at a $350 one-time fee plus $25 per month and dogs are not accepted, both communities are 100% smoke-free, parking is unassigned at one vehicle per tenant with no garages or carports, there is no pool, and painting is generally not permitted.

How far in advance should you start a Plymouth move?

Thirty days is a workable window for a typical apartment move. Use the first week to confirm whether you are in the City or the Township, the middle two weeks for utilities, accounts, and address changes, and the last week for condition photos and keys. Learn the winter parking rules immediately.
