Moving to Plymouth, MI and Commuting From It

1 guide · Last verified: September 2026

Most people who move to Plymouth move here for a commute. The city sits in western Wayne County just south of M-14 and west of I-275, roughly 27 miles northwest of downtown Detroit and about 18 miles northeast of Ann Arbor per Wikipedia. Those two highways do the work. M-14 runs west into Ann Arbor and east toward I-275. I-275 runs south toward Detroit Metro Airport.

Rome2Rio estimates the drive to Ann Arbor at about 25 minutes over 17 miles and the drive to DTW at about 23 minutes over 17.9 miles. Those are estimates, not measurements, and they do not account for rush hour on M-14. Treat them as a starting point and drive the route yourself at the hour you would actually be driving it before you sign anything.

There is work in Plymouth too, not just through it. Adient, the global automotive seating company, is headquartered here. Aisin World Corp. of America, Hella Corporate Center USA, and Metaldyne are based in Plymouth Charter Township. Schoolcraft College is in Livonia, which Rome2Rio estimates at 6.2 miles from Plymouth. Trinity Health Livonia, a 304-bed hospital, is in the same direction. Ford's Livonia Transmission Plant sits on Plymouth Road.

The thing to plan for is that Plymouth is car-dependent. Public transit is very limited. If you are moving from a city where you did not need a car, budget for one.

The guides below cover commute routes and times, the employers people move here for, how the school district works if you are renting with kids, a move-in checklist, and what a Michigan winter actually asks of a renter.

Rent is base rent only. It does not include the flat monthly shared utility fee ($99 for one-bedroom homes, $135 for two-bedroom homes, covering gas, heat, water, sewer and trash), the $26/month administrative fee, or electric, which is separately metered and billed by DTE in the resident's name.
